Concerts at the Point was founded in 1997 to enrich the cultural environment for residents of southeastern New England by presenting chamber music concerts performed by distinguished musicians and exceptional young vocal artists. The concerts are held in the Westport Point United Methodist Church, a small venue with superb acoustics. The 1999 Baldwin piano purchased after a gala fundraiser enhances the performance of the piano ensembles.
From its beginnings as a modest church-sponsored season of three concerts, Concerts at the Point now presents five outstanding chamber music concerts each year and has obtained a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization designation, as well as incorporation status from the Internal Revenue Service. The roster of performers includes the Muir, Borromeo, Hawthorne, Lydian, American, Escher, Mendelssohn, and Jupiter String Quartets; the Triple Helix, Tempest, Gramercy, Claremont, Kitchen-Kim-Hodgkinson, Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson, and Boston trios; solo pianists Virginia Eskin, Mihae Lee, Randall Hodgkinson, Jonathan Bass, and Frederick Moyer; Walden Chamber Players; Boston Chamber Music Society; Triton Horn Trio; Adaskin String Trio with Sally Pinkas, piano; Strata; Apple Hill Chamber Players; TAGI; Concertante; and the Boston University Opera Institute.
Community support has grown steadily. The number of advertisers and individual donors has increased each year, as have foundation grants and corporate sponsors. The foundation list now includes an Organizational Support Grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council and grants from the Helen E. Ellis Charitable Foundation, the Grimshaw Gudewicz Charitable Foundation, the Carter Family Charitable Trust, and the Robert C. Nyman Fund at the Rhode Island Foundation. Corporate sponsors include Westport Federal Credit Union, BankFive, and Hotel Commonwealth in Boston. This support enables the series to engage extraordinary artists while maintaining ticket prices that are within reach of all.
Volunteers who serve on the Board of Directors and as Advisors include individuals with degrees in music, as well as people from the legal and human services, business, and financial worlds. Their varied skills have combined to guide Concerts at the Point through many successful seasons. |
