Concerts
at the Point was founded in 1997 to enhance the cultural environment for
residents of southeastern New England by presenting chamber music concerts
performed by distinguished musicians and exceptional young vocal artists.
The concerts are held in the Westport Point United Methodist Church, a
small venue with extraordinary acoustics, an ideal site for the intimacy
of chamber music. The 1999 Baldwin piano purchased after a gala fundraiser
enhances the performance of the piano ensembles.
From a modest, church-sponsored season of three concerts, Concerts at
the Point now presents five outstanding chamber music concerts each year
and has obtained a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization designation from
the Internal Revenue Service. The roster of performers includes the Muir,
Borromeo, Hawthorne, Lydian, and Jupiter String Quartets; the Triple Helix,
Tempest, Gramercy, Claremont, Kitchen-Kim-Hodgkinson, and Boston piano
trios; Virginia Eskin, piano; The Walden Chamber Players, Boston Chamber
Music Society, Triton Horn Trio (violin, French horn, and piano), the
Adaskin String Trio; Strata (clarinet, violin, and piano) and the renowned
Apple Hill chamber players. The final concert each season features rising
young stars of the operatic world from the Boston University Opera Institute.
Community support has grown steadily. The list of advertisers and individual donors has increased each year. The Westport Arts Council, funded by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, is joined by an impressive list of corporate sponsors which include Sovereign Bank, Waring-Sullivan Homes of Memorial Tribute, the Howard Bayne Fund, the Helen E. Ellis Charitable Trust, The Grimshaw-Gudewicz Charitable Foundation, and the Rhode Island Foundation/Newport County Fund. Corporate sponsors are vital to the life of the series; their support allows the series to engage extraordinary artists and to maintain ticket prices that are within reach of all.
Volunteers serve as our Board of Directors. The Board includes several
individuals with degrees in music, as well as people from the human services,
business, and financial worlds. Their varied skills have combined to guide
Concerts at the Point through ten outstandingly successful seasons. |
